Why does working in dentistry leave you feeling so drained?

Some days in practice are exhausting for obvious reasons. A full appointment book, a difficult case or an understaffed team can leave anyone ready to call it a day.

But what about the days that look manageable on paper, yet still leave you completely depleted?

The answer may lie in the less visible demands of working in dentistry.

It’s not always about the hours you work

Dental professionals constantly move between technical precision and human connection.

You may be managing an anxious patient one moment, making a complex clinical decision the next, supporting a team member and then moving straight into another appointment, all while staying calm, focused and professional.

That emotional and mental load can add up.

Prime Practice identifies high emotional demands, time pressure and limited control over workload as examples of psychosocial hazards that can place psychological strain on dental teams.

Over time, these demands can contribute to fatigue that isn’t necessarily fixed by one good night’s sleep.

Recognise what’s taking your energy

When exhaustion is treated simply as something you need to “push through”, it can be easy to overlook what’s actually contributing to it.

Instead, consider where the pressure is coming from.

Is your schedule consistently too tight? Are you carrying responsibilities that could be shared? Do you have enough time between demanding appointments? Are you finding it difficult to mentally switch off once you leave the practice?

Recognising the source of the strain can be an important first step towards addressing it.

Look beyond resilience

Being resilient doesn’t mean having an unlimited capacity to absorb pressure.

Sometimes the more useful question isn’t “How can I cope better?” but “What could change to make this more sustainable?”

That could mean creating clearer boundaries, reviewing workloads, asking for support or simply having an honest conversation about what’s becoming difficult.

You don’t need to wait until exhaustion becomes overwhelming to make a change.

Support matters

If work pressure, stress or wellbeing concerns are affecting you or someone you know, support is available.
