Why can taking time off feel so difficult?

You’ve booked the leave. Your out-of-office is on. Technically, you’re away from work.

So why are you still checking your phone?

As your career or practice grows, stepping away can sometimes become harder, not easier. More experience often brings more responsibility — patients rely on you, your team looks to you for direction and the day-to-day running of the practice can feel closely connected to your presence.

Before long, taking a break can start to feel like another thing to worry about.

When responsibility follows you home

Time away doesn’t necessarily mean switching off.

You might find yourself checking messages, thinking about what’s happening at the practice or already worrying about the workload waiting when you return.

Prime Practice highlights that workload pressures in busy dental environments can make rest difficult even when leave is technically available.

The challenge isn’t always finding time to take a break. It’s creating a practice where you feel able to take one.

Make switching off part of the plan

If everything depends on one person, stepping away will always feel difficult.

Before your next break, consider:

▪️Who can make decisions while you’re away?
▪️Are responsibilities and handovers clear?
▪️Does your team know what genuinely requires your attention?▪️Can notifications or work emails wait until you’re back?
▪️Are there systems that could reduce reliance on you?

Putting the right support in place doesn’t just make holidays easier. It can create a stronger, more resilient practice.

Rest supports performance

Time away isn’t about stepping back from your responsibilities. Recovery helps protect your capacity to manage them.

Regular rest can give you space to reset, regain perspective and return with more energy for your patients, your team and your business.

And perhaps the real sign of a well-run practice isn’t that it can’t function without you — it’s that you’ve built the people and systems that allow you to step away when you need to.

Support matters

If work pressure, stress or wellbeing concerns are affecting you or someone you know, support is available.
