As the dental industry continues to evolve rapidly, embracing technological innovation and responding to changing patient expectations, staying ahead requires a proactive approach. With more than 35 years’ experience in supporting the dental sector, Sandy Constanti (Grow Community Ambassador and Senior Finance Specialist at Credabl), shares her insights on the key trends shaping the future of dentistry.

Technology in dentistry

Digital dentistry continues to evolve, with AI-powered diagnostics, 3D printing, and CAD/CAM systems becoming essential. AI enhances treatment planning, early diagnosis, and orthodontics through self-service solutions. Practices must adapt to leverage these innovations, streamlining operations, improving patient outcomes, and increasing efficiencies in record-keeping and appointment management.

Despite automation, human expertise remains vital. As technology simplifies processes, industry knowledge, mentorship, and collaboration are key to success. Ongoing education is essential as AI rapidly reshapes the face of dentistry.

Sustainability

With environmental concerns becoming increasingly important, dental practices are adopting more sustainable practices such as reducing single-use plastics, improving energy efficiency and adopting solar panels and water conservation. Some practices are integrating laser technology to enhance hygiene while minimising waste. Balancing sustainability with sterilisation and infection control remains essential.

Surveys, including one by Credabl, confirm that practitioners and patients increasingly prioritise sustainable choices.

Workforce challenges

The challenge of recruiting and retaining skilled dental professionals is a major challenge. Demand for services continues to rise, yet workforce shortages remain. Retaining staff requires investment in training, development, and workplace culture.

Upskilling dental nurses and technicians, I feel, is crucial. Expanding career pathways and study opportunities for dental assistants aids retention. Infection control training, traditionally focused on dentists, must also be for support staff. Practices that build strong teams through mentorship and career growth will build resilient businesses.

Community and well-being

The pressures of working at or running a dental practice can take a toll on mental well-being. Engaging with professional networks and communities like Grow Community offers valuable support, enabling practitioners to share experiences, gain mentorship, and access a wide range of professional resources. Leveraging these resources helps practitioners manage risk, make informed decisions, and ensure sustainable growth.

Looking ahead

As the dental landscape continues to change, practices that embrace adaptability, innovation, and a commitment to both technological and sustainable advancements will thrive. The future of dentistry is not just about adopting new technologies but also about building a practice culture that prioritizes patient care, team well-being, and environmental responsibility.

By leveraging networks like Grow Community, dental professionals can access the expertise and support needed to navigate these changes successfully and ensure the long-term success of their practices.
